AND THE WINNERS ARE... EDC Announces 2007 Hall of Fame Recipients, Celebrates 20th Anniversary of Awards Ceremony
The EDC recognized Hall of Fame winners on Sept. 28 in a ceremony attended by nearly 500 people at the Ritz-Carlton in Sarasota. The event’s presenting sponsor was Halfacre Construction Co.
“We honored businesses that have achieved excellence in their industries and are recognized as good employers, corporate citizens and community partners,” said Kathleen Baylis, EDC president. “The businesses recognized during the award program’s 20 year history have been among our region’s most innovative and successful companies.”

Bruce Coffey of L-3 Communications and Lou Orbendorf of METI
| L-3 Communications, manufacturer of more than 70 percent of the world’s flight recorders, was recognized with the Award of Excellence. In addition to making flight and marine data recorders, the company’s additional division, Medical Education Technologies, Inc., creates simulation mannequins used in training healthcare providers in more than 400 medical schools. The company has achieved outstanding growth in the last decade, tripling sales and increasing its workforce from 160 to 400 employees. Even with recent workforce growth, L-3 Communications’ average employee has been with the company for more than 17 years.

| was recognized as Technology Company of the Year for their use of cutting-edge technology in treating more than 500 prostate cancer patients per year. The business’ commitment to providing an excellent patient experience was also lauded.
LeaderChip, a Venice-based IT solutions provider, was the runner-up.
The EDC also announced the creation of the Clyde Nixon Business Leadership Award.

The award will be presented annually to a leader that exemplifies outstanding values and business leadership. The first award was given posthumously to the man after whom it is named. Mr. Nixon’s widow Joan, and son Scott, accepted the award on behalf of the family.

SARASOTA INTERNATIONAL DESIGN SUMMIT NOV. 5-7
EDC Investors Receive Discounted Registration
The Ringling College of Art and Design will host its second Sarasota International Design Summit on Nov. 5-7, 2007 at the Ritz Carlton, Sarasota and the Ringling College of Art and Design campus.
“Our 2007 Summit theme, Designing for Life, will showcase visionary thinkers and practitioners who are using the power of design to solve lifestyle issues and global challenges. They will also focus on the development of new products, services and business models that will shape the way we live, work, and play,” said Dr. Larry Thompson, president of Ringling College of Art and Design. “Over the course of three very exciting days, we’ll explore how design is shaping the exploding knowledge and service economies as a key driver of innovation and differentiation.”
The Summit showcases the College’s commitment to expanding the role of design and design thinking in all walks of life, and its innovative approaches to training students in the business of art and design. Weaving the vitally important issue of sustainability through every discussion, the Summit will present innovative thinkers and practitioners from disciplines such as design, business, science, entertainment, and medicine on topics including
