ROLE Summit to Focus on Future of Economy
Nominations are being accepted for participation in Re-Energizing Our Local Economy (ROLE), a collaborative summit aimed at reaching community agreement on a set of actions that will help jumpstart the local economy. The ROLE summit will be held October 3, 2008, 7:45 am. – 2:30 p.m. at the Gulf Coast Conference Center, 4740 Cattlemen Rd., Sarasota. Individuals interested in participating or nominating others are encouraged to complete the form by September 15, 2008. Leaders from the Creative Services Cluster participated in an arts and communications professional development workshop for high school teachers at the Ringling Museum of Art on August 6. Participating teachers are part of small learning centers in high schools throughout Sarasota County. The panel consisted of Patricia Courtois from Clarke/Mower Associates, Michael Carlson from Carlson Studio Architects and Jeanne Corcoran, director of the Sarasota Film and Entertainment Office.Diane Andrews, EDC business development manager, facilitated the discussion about the role of arts in the workplace. Each panelist spoke about the opportunities for teachers and students to job shadow, intern and visit creative services businesses for field trips. _______________________________________ IN THE FUTURE Economic Development 101: September 11, 8:30-10:00 am, North Port City Hall. The free workshop is for professional service providers, such as real estate agents, bankers, lawyers and engineers, interested in learning about economic development tools available to assist their clients. The workshop will focus on resources available to businesses including local and state incentives and expansion and relocation services. Examples of successful projects will also be discussed. Hall of Fame Awards: September 26, 11:30 am-1:30 pm, Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota. Join the EDC in recognizing outstanding technology, service and manufacturing companies and a non-profit organization at this annual awards luncheon. Individual tickets are $65. Half and full corporate tables are available for $375 and $750, respectfully. Research & Development Tax Credit Workshop: September 30, 8:30-9:30 am, Michael's on East. The R&D Tax Credit can provide, among other things, a hidden and immediate source of cash for many companies as well as a significant reduction to current and future years’ federal and state tax liabilities. Learn about this opportunity during the free workshop. Federally Funded Programs (SBIR/STTR) Workshop: October 2, 8:00 -11:30 am, Keiser University. Learn how your business can engage in federally funded programs with potential for commercialization. Information about the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs and the Small Business Development Center at Manatee Community College will be provided. This fee for this program, co-sponsored by Manatee and Sarasota EDC’s, is $20. Investor Update Breakfast-"New Faces in Education": October 6, 7:45-9:00 am, Asolo. This event will feature Dr. Lars Hafner, president, Manatee Community College and Sarasota County School Superintendant Lori White. Government Procurement Workshop _______________________________________ Ringling College of Art & Design - International Design Summit: Technology + Design: Visual. Social. Mobile. Ringling College of Art and Design will hold its third Sarasota International Design Summit, an annual gathering of designers, entrepreneurs, technology professionals, and thought leaders from diverse disciplines, October 27-29. Over the course of three days, the increasingly important role of design and design thinking in shaping experiences with visual, social, and mobile media will be explored.
