Federally Funded Commercialization Workshop
The EDCs of Sarasota and Manatee counties will hold a workshop for technology, manufacturing and other design-oriented businesses interested in federally funded commercialization opportunities. The workshop will be held Thursday, Oct. 2, 8:00 -11:30 am at Keiser University, 6151 Lake Osprey Drive, Sarasota.

Carol Ann Dykes, site manager for the University of Central Florida’s Technology Incubator will speak about the U.S. Small Business Association’s (SBA) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

The SBIR program is a three-phase award system aimed at providing small businesses with the opportunities to propose innovative ideas that meet specific research and development needs of the Federal Government.

The STTR program is similar, but requires companies to partner with nonprofit research institutions and universities to transition ideas from the laboratory to the marketplace, to not only meet the demands of the government, but also foster high-tech economic development.

The workshop will also feature:

-A case study of Sarasota superconductor company Supergenics, LLC., a recipient of multiple SBIR grants

-A presentation about intellectual property protection by Matt Jenkins, Esq. of Jacox, Mecstroth & Jenkins

-Information about business development programs offered at the Small Business Development Center at Manatee Community College

The cost of the workshop is $20 and includes a continental breakfast. Advance registration is required and available online or by calling (941) 309-1200 ext. 110.
