Governor Visits EDC
Governor Charlie Crist visited with 10 area business leaders at the EDC on Tuesday. Among the issues raised by attendees were health care costs for small businesses, retaining and attracting technology talent to the state and support for existing businesses.

“High Octane” Sarasota County Film Mixer to Feature Stunt Men The Sarasota County Film and Entertainment Office will hold a networking mixer for film, television, media production professionals and community members on Wednesday, June 17 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the City of Sarasota Municipal Auditorium, 801 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL. Advance registration is $10 and includes hors d’oeuvres and door prizes. [register]
Hooked on the EDC: Economic Development Corporation Networking Event to be Held at MOTE June 18 The EDC will hold “EDC Rocks: Hooked on the EDC” on Thursday, June 18, 5:00-7:30 at Mote Marine Laboratory, 1600 Ken Thompson Parkway, Sarasota, FL 34236. The sea-themed event is designed to provide networking opportunities for local business representatives and celebrate the work of the EDC and its volunteers and partners. The event will also serve as a kick-off to the updated community-wide Economic Development Strategic Plan for Sarasota County.
EDC staff members and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about the organization and the new market opportunities identified in the plan.
The event will feature live music, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. The cost is $15. [register]

Gear Up for Grad School Workshop at USF Sarasota-Manatee
USF will hold a workshop for potential graduate students on Saturday, June 13, 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the Selby Auditorium, University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota.

West Africa Regional Conference A business expo and workshops on resource efficient technologies and products for rural communities will be held July 7-14 in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria.
The workshops are meant to provide a forum in the West Africa Region for discussing and showcasing appropriate technologies in agriculture, energy, transportation, communication, water and irrigation, and the thrift and banking sectors that can improve living and working conditions in rural communities.
